DJ Shredding was founded in 2004 by Debbie Diegel. Debbie has developmental disabilities, has never walked without a walker and uses a scooter for mobility. Despite her handicaps, she is fiercely independent and loves to be engaged doing meaningful work.
Prior to 2004 she had worked in a packaging warehouse for eight years until the packager went out of business. It was difficult to find other work at which she could participate and feel as if she were contributing. When at an employment seminar on micro enterprises with her mother, she was asked what she enjoyed doing in her free time. She replied: "SHREDDING"! (For several years during leisure time she had been shredding documents for family and friends for nominal amounts of money). So why not do it as a business?
With the help of Services to Enhance Potential and her family she researched what needed to be done, leased commercial grade shredders from Legacy Solutions Inc. and established D. J. Shredding. Her business is located at Services to Enhance Potential's Northwest Resource Center in Westland, Michigan. The D. J. Shredding commercial grade cross cut shredders and locked storage area for in-process documents are located at this center. Any required work support is provided by Service to Enhance Potential's HIPAA trained staff.
Deb did most of the early marketing herself reaching out to family and friends, attending job fairs and conventions, handing out brochures and flyers. To this day, if you see her at a restaurant or the mall, in a medical office or church, she's likely to ask if you have any shredding and hand you a brochure.
D. J. Shredding has never turned down a job for being too large or small. (It's job size over the years has ranged from 5 pounds to 2.5tons)!! Deb looks for larger jobs but always remembers that she started out doing small personal and business shredding jobs and welcomes jobs of any size!
